Local Bikers on a Mission: May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Print E-mail
altLake County, FL, – The Lake County Chapter of ABATE of Florida, Inc. (American Bikers Aiming Towards Education) has taken a stance to promote the Governor’s signed proclamation. Governor Rick Scott has recognized Florida’s largest Motorcycle Rights Organization, our request and efforts, and has declared May 2011 as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Through this proclamation, ABATE asks for the public to be aware of motorcycles on our highways and byways. The Lake County Chapter has taken that with much pride and has gone one step further. The chapter’s Safety Director, Al “Scooter” Monteleone, along with many others, have accomplished having the cities of Lady Lake, and Leesburg sign their own proclamations. Safety Director Monteleone in cooperation and appreciation of Clear Channel has a digital billboard on Hwy 27 northbound in Lady Lake, portraying on all three sides to “Watch out for Motorcycles” to the local heavy traffic area. Monteleone has also traveled to Sumter County and had the Board of County Commissioners there recognize and sign into effect a similar proclamation for their county. The Lake County BCC has recognized May in a signed resolution put together by the committee members of the Lake County Community Traffic Safety Team. ABATE sits on this as chairperson.

ABATE of Florida’s Lake County Chapter is well-known for their hard work and dedication to public education and motorcycle awareness within the community. They presently teach ABATE’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness Program to the Leesburg High School’s Drivers Ed class, originally as a “pilot program” that was started over 4 years ago. We recently taught this same class to students at South Sumter County High School, and plan to continue to do in the future. The MSAP classes and their trained instructors are available for any business, school, or committee groups. There is no charge for this educational program. Members of ABATE are all volunteers and donate their time and service for the mere hope that they may save lives.
