Gray Middle Students Earn Top Honors in Essay Contest

GROVELAND — In the South Lake Rotary Club essay contest, a Gray Middle School student came out as the grand prize winner.

Eighth grader Morgan Salber won a laptop for writing an essay that focused on the Rotary Club’s four-way test: “Is it the truth?”; “Is it fair to all concerned?”; “Will it build goodwill and better friendships?”; and “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

The South Lake Rotary Club chose one first place winner for every grade level and one grand prize winner overall. Out of 600 South Lake County students who entered the contest, Gray Middle School had two other students who came in first place and received $50 gift cards: sixth grader Angel Lor and seventh grader Zachery Ernst.

“All students did a great job in writing their essays and the teachers and staff are very proud of the accomplishments the students have made in their writing,” said Dr. Janice Boyd, Principal of Gray Middle School.

altLEESBURG — Earlier this month, students and staff at Oak Park Middle School in Leesburg were asked to wear orange, which is the color of Leukemia awareness, and take part in a huge group photo from an aerial view.

Oak Park Middle teachers Lisa Johnson, Brooke Miller and Stephanie Phillips created huge letters to be held up that spell out “Kick Cancer.”

“This is just the beginning of what Oak Park teachers, staff and students are taking on to help raise awareness,” said Lilly Jenkins, a teacher at Oak Park Middle School.
