An Evening with Isabel Wilkerson Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist & Author

Print E-mail
altIsabel Wilkerson returns to Eustis on March 31, 2011. For the City of Eustis sponsored event, she will present and discuss her bestselling book, The Warmth of Other Suns (Random House). The event begins at 7 p.m. with a reception at 6:15 p.m. at the Eustis Community Center located at 601 Northshore Dr.

About the Author:
Isabel Wilkerson is the first black woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in the history of American journalism. Ms. Wilkerson devoted fifteen years to research and writing for her book. She interviews more than 1200 people, unearthed archival works and gathered the voices of the famous and the unknown to tell the epic story.

About the Book:
Named one of the 10 Best Books of 2010 by the New York Times
From World War I to the 1970s, some six million black Americans fled the U.S. south seeking better lives. They followed paths to cities in the north, mid-west, and west. Their leaving is known as “America’s Great Migration”-an event that resulted in family descendants becoming some of the country’s most well known in the sciences, arts, literature, music, sports, and politics. The Civil Rights Movement was also set in motion by some of the migration offspring.

This is the story of three unknown people who made the journey and of the forces that compelled them to leave. One of them, George Swanson Starling, is the character whose history and reflections are tied to his life in Eustis, FL – where he is also buried.

Ticketing and Donations:

Tickets for this event are free and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Donations will be accepted at the event. All donations received will be used for the Mt. Olive Cemetery Association Fencing Project. For more information and ticket locations, please call the Eustis Memorial Library at (352) 357-5686.
