Warrior's Path Self-Defense

Warrior's Path Self-Defense training includes skills of perception, empty hand, practical weapons, ground fighting and fitness. For men and women. Don't be caught by surprise, classes are fun and dynamic so join us and bring a friend with you.  Class is Saturday, June 4th, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Cooper Memorial Library, room 108.  Call Wendell to sign up yourself and a friend for the free class at (407) 924-9695.

 

South Lake Art League Kids Summer Programs

Every Wednesday Kids' Classes, Montrose Studio  3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., taught by Miss Pat, will be ongoing through the summer.  Openings exist for new students, ages 9+, to learn watercolor and mixed media. 
 

Mrs. T. of The Creative Side will present a week of summer camp at each gallery location.  Monday - Friday,  9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Studio fee $90.00 Montrose Studio - June 20th through June 24th.  Cagan Studio - June 27th through July 1st.  This session will give artists the opportunity to explore a variety of paint, drawing and clay media as well as create some unique crafts! 


Kid's Creative Writing and Illustrating Experience:  Cagan Studio.  Create your own life story book.  In this 4-week series, kids ages 6 to 10 will compose the book, illustrate the book, discuss the book and participate in a video of their experience that will be shown on the Cagan cable channel. James Owner of www.LittleStarNetwork.com and author of the kid's book "WhyAm I?" will be leading this workshop.  Studio fee:  $90.00  Dates: Thursdays, June 9, 16, 23, 30  from 4p.m. to 6 p.m.  
 

Creative Corner for Kids @ Cagan Studio.   In this camp, kids 6 - 10 will participate in different types of painting, drawing, crafting, beading and just exploring their creative selves. Studio fee: $90.00   Sign up for one week or both.   Different instructors.

Week One:   July 11 - 15   2:30 - 4:00 pm daily
Week Two:   July 18 - 22  2:30 - 4:00 pm daily

Nature Hike at PEAR Park

altLEESBURG — Park Rangers with the Lake County Parks & Trails Division will conduct a Meadow Wildflower and Wildlife nature walk on Saturday, May 21st from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Palatlakaha Environmental and Agricultural Reserve (PEAR Park), located at 4800 University Ave., Leesburg.

During the 2-mile hike, Park Rangers will explore and discuss the importance of native meadows while enjoying the spring-blooming wildflowers and native wildlife at the park.

PEAR Park is the largest County park at 318 acres, and is divided into two distinct areas. The “Gateway,” or front 50 acres, is being developed into an active recreation area. The remaining 268 acres is a preserve dedicated to the area’s historic ecosystem including areas for the threatened Florida Scrub-Jay and declining Northern Bobwhite “Quail” and Eastern Meadowlark. The 268 acres also holds a community garden, native butterfly garden, xeric garden, nature center, two scenic pavilions and access to hiking and nature trails.
Participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and hiking shoes. Reservations are encouraged, but not required.

Nature Hike for Beginner Bird Watchers

altFERNDALE— The Lake County Parks & Trails Division will lead a Beginning Birders Hike on Saturday, March 26th from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Ferndale Preserve, located off County Road 455 in South Lake County.

Park Rangers will help participants learn how to identify common birds by sight or sound, all while enjoying the picturesque scenery offered by the 192-acre preserve.

The preserve is on the western shore of Lake Apopka and has a combined equestrian and hiking trail that offers stunning vistas of the lake and surrounding areas.  The activity may include hiking over uneven or difficult terrain for a distance of over 2 miles.

For the best viewing experience, it is recommended that participants bring their own binoculars and field guides, and are encouraged to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat and hiking shoes. Space is limited, so reservations are encouraged.

Groveland Elementary Event to Feature Health, Nutrition & Family Fitness Information

GROVELAND — Groveland Elementary, located at 930 Parkwood St., will be hosting an interactive and exciting event designed to promote healthy habits, good nutrition and family fitness on Thursday, March 31st, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Children and their parents can look forward to participating in fun fitness activities and games, watch a healthy cooking demonstration, get information about nutrition and portion control, tobacco prevention and primary care, as well as receive free glucose screenings and blood pressure checks. Children are invited to bring their favorite doll or stuffed animal for a “Doll & Stuffed Animal Clinic” where healthcare professionals will evaluate and treat the dolls’ and stuffed animals’ ailments.

“Groveland Elementary would like to thank the National Training Center, Lake County Extension Office, Lake County Health Department, Publix Super Markets and South Lake Medical Center for their help and support,” said Nathalie Christopher, Family-School Liaison at Groveland Elementary.
