Dining in the Dark

Print E-mail
Served in total darkness, the first annual Dining in the Dark for New Vision event will be a unique expedition in to a world of smell, taste, sound and texture.  The dinner is designed to raise awareness and funds for New Vision for Independence, a local non-profit agency that provides rehabilitation, community education, and support services for people with blindness or low vision.  Without vision, information from our other senses becomes more noticeable and conversation becomes more intimate.  For those who are blind, this is a chance for friends and family to experience for a few short hours what those who are blind live with every day.

Held at Lake-Sumter Community College on Friday, June 3rd, the evening will begin at 6 p.m. in the Magnolia Room with an explanation of the events for the evening and a silent auction. Salad, entrée, and desert will be served in the adjoining gym at 7 p.m. The lights will be turned off and volunteers from the Lake County Sheriff’s SWAT team will serve the entrée.  A keynote address will be presented by Joyce Hildreth, Director of the Florida Division of Blind Services.  At the end of the evening a Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Mr. Ronald Paladini, who lost his vision as a young adult but overcame all obstacles and has led an active and full life, inspiring many with his independence and successes.

Harper Family Charitable Foundation is the presenting sponsor for Dining in the Dark.  The event is open to everyone.  In addition to giving everyone a whole new way to think about darkness, vision, and the power of perception, New Vision’s goal is to raise $10,000 to provide rehabilitation training and instruction to adults and young children in Lake and Sumter counties.

Please call for reservations.  Individual tickets for general seating are available for $35, or a private table for eight may be reserved for $300.  Tickets or tables may be purchased by calling New Vision at 352-435-5040.
