Help "Stuff the Bus"

Print E-mail
TAVARES — The Lake County Department of Economic Development & Community Services, Public Transportation Division, is hosting its Fifth Annual Stuff the Bus campaign on Saturday, November 20th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at area Wal-Mart stores.

The goal of the annual food drive is to stuff a bus full of donated nonperishable food items, baby food and pet food. A Lake County Connection bus will be parked at the Wal-Mart stores in Mount Dora at 17030 U.S. Highway 441 and in Leesburg at 2501 N. Citrus Blvd., with volunteers and County employees volunteering their time at each location.

“Last year we collected more than 4,200 pounds and we’re hoping the response is even better this year.” said Ken Harley, Director of the Public Transportation Division.  “We are also hoping that the Mount Dora store will finally beat the Leesburg store again.  Leesburg has collected the most food in the past three years.”

The nonperishable food collected at the Leesburg location will be donated to The Salvation Army and items collected at the Mount Dora location will be donated to the Lake Cares Food Pantry. The program helps support the Human Care Network in partnership with United Way of Lake & Sumter County.

Lake County’s Public Transportation Division is responsible for operation of the County’s fixed-bus route system, LakeXpress, as well as the paratransit service Lake County Connection.

LakeXpress operates Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. The LakeXpress service includes four routes. Route 1 runs from The Villages to Eustis, primarily on U.S. Highway 441. Route 2 circulates in downtown Leesburg. Route 3 circulates in downtown Mount Dora. Route 4 runs from the Altoona Post Office on State Road 19 to the community of Zellwood on U.S. Highway 441 where passengers can transfer to LYNX route 44.

Tall Trees Residents Helping HS/SPCA at Neighborhood Garage Sale

Print E-mail

It’s becoming tradition for the Village of Tall Trees to host their HUGE Neighborhood Garage Sale on the first Saturday of November, every other year and this year it will be on November 6th from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. In past garage sales, there have been 50 or more homes participating so there are LOTS of great deals to be found. New, this year, will be maps at each of the two Tall Trees gates (one behind Bob Evans Restaurant and one at the 2nd roundabout on Buena Vista Blvd. southbound) for buyers to easily locate sellers.

Residents of Tall Trees can begin gathering their treasures to sell. Also, traffic will be directed in a one-way pattern to help with flow. Sellers need to: 1) PRE-register for $5 to participate in this community event, 2) remember to have lots of change and 3) start saving bags/boxes for buyers to carry their items.

This year, they have welcomed donations for the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County with items such as pet beds, blankets, bath towels along with pet food and monetary donations. Donation sites will be identified on the maps. Event volunteer, Elaine Nelson commented “this is a wonderful way to not only help our residents recycle many useful items but also a way to help our community’s animals in need. Participating residents may also consider donating their proceeds from the yard sales to additionally help the HS/SPCA do their important work.”

If you live in Tall Trees and wish to be a part of this event, contact Tami Ficca at 352-750-1358 or Marguerite Morris at 352-430-1937 for details. If you're a shopper looking for a great find, mark your calendar and be ready to make a deal! This event is open to the general public. Don’t forget to bring your donations to help the HS/SPCA provide care to abused and homeless animals in need. The Humane Society/SPCA can be reached at 352-793-9117, www.hsspca.org or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
